English Children's Books About Korea

Part of moving with a child is learning as much as possible about the new country the family will be calling home.  We have been collecting children's books about Korea since we moved from Germany. They turn our story time into great learning moments not just for Sam but for mom and dad as well. Here is a list of our favorites!

Bee-bim Bop!
Sam received this wonderful book from a friend here in Seoul. We adore the fun rhythm of the story and the pictures keep Sam delighted. Not to mention when we are at a Korean restaurant and I ask Sam if she wants Bee-bim Bob, she gets so excited! (Thank you N. & B.)

Book Description courtesy of Amazon.com:
A wonderful paperback picture book about the joys of family and food, from Newbery Award winning author Linda Sue Park. Bee-bim bop ("mix-mix rice") is a traditional Korean dish. In bouncy rhyming text, a hungry child tells of helping her mother make bee-bim bop: shopping, preparing ingredients, setting the table, and sitting down to enjoy a favorite meal. The enthusiasm of the narrartor is conveyed in the whimsical illustrations, which bring details from the artist’s childhood in Korea to his depiction of a modern Korean-American family. The book includes Linda Sue’s own bee-bim bop recipe!

My First Book of Korean Words: An ABC Rhyming Book
Sam's dad enjoys reading this one to her to he can practice his Korean vocabulary. I enjoy reading it so Sam can practice her ABCs.

Its ABC structure provides a familiar framework that encourages fun and easy learning. The mix of everyday words, sound words and words specific to Korean life gives kids a varied sample of language and culture. Each word taught is shown in Hangeul as well as in its Romanized form, and cultural and linguistic notes here and there enhance the learning experience. Kids will love Ji-min and her friends as they join her from page to colorful page!

Let's Learn About Korea
This book has grown with Sam. There are texts geared towards younger children and texts for older children. At the end of the book are coloring pages.

Book Description courtesy of Amazon.com:This is the new revised edition of the very popular book Let's Learn About Korea. The aim of this book is twofold: to introduce Korean customs and to introduce some of the ideas and values that all Korean children are taught. It is a wonderful insight into the hearts, minds and traditions that all Korean people share. The information is presented through the eyes of a young Korean girl as she goes about her daily life.

  1. These are very helpful. Want to give them to friends who just migrated with their kids. Maybe we could follow each other on Bloglovin and/or GFC?
